What is an Ulpan?

The Ministry of Immigrant Absorption views knowledge of the Hebrew language as an important prerequisite for an immigrant's absorption into Israeli life.

The Ulpan Department operates in the following areas:

Cooperation in the running of ulpanim for the benefit of immigrants.

Cooperation in the development of unique study methods and programs for the various immigrant populations.

Providing cultural and information services to immigrants to facilitate their absorption into Israeli society.

Cooperation in the development of initiatives and innovations in the field of ulpanim and in empowerment of the Hebrew language.

What is an Ulpan?

Ulpanim are educational frameworks run by the Ministries of Immigrant Absorption and Education and the Jewish Agency, for learning the Hebrew language.

The ulpanim are held throughout the year and classes are opened according to the number of immigrants who are eligible to learn Hebrew at that time and in that area.
If there is no class in a specific area, the immigrant is referred elsewhere.

Hours of Study

There are several study programs, the most common of which is the five-day-a-week morning program. There are also evening programs.

Duration of Ulpan

A morning ulpan lasts about five months, and an evening ulpan about 10 months, depending on the study program. In total, students study approximately 500 study hours.

The Registration Process

Consult with the coordinator at the bureau or branch of the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption closest to your home, who will refer you to an ulpan.

If there are several possibilities, one may visit each of them and get an impression of the level of studies before registering.
